Mohanlal was born on 21 May 1960, the youngest child of Adv. Viswanathan Nair and Santhakumari. Mohanlal, according to his mother, was a very peaceful and quiet child. Though he was born in Elanthur in Pathanamthitta, lal attended school in Trivandrum, his mother’s hometown. This relocation from his birthplace to his mother’s home was necessitated by his father’s secretarial position. The actor began his educational career at Mudavanmukal Lover Primary School before transferring to Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School. He earned a B.Com. degree from M.G. College in Trivandrum. Prior to entering the film industry in 1977, he was a state champion in boxing.
Mohanlal was born on 21st May 1960, the youngest child of Vishwanathan Nair and Santhakumari. On 28th April 1988, Mohanlal married Suchitra. Suchitra is the daughter of late K. Balaji, a notable film producer. Later in an interview, Mohanlal revealed that Suchitra used to send him notes indicating her desire to marry him. Vismaya and Pranav are the couple’s daughters and sons.
Mohanlal began demonstrating his acting ability at the tender age of 12. The occasion was a school-sponsored acting competition. He was in sixth grade, while the most of his competitors were in tenth grade. However, these elders were no match for Lal’s acting abilities, and he won the competition’s ‘Best Actor Award,’ his first! This victory increased his popularity at school, and he began to seriously consider a career in film. Later in his undergraduate years, he made acquaintances with peers who shared his desire and passion for cinema and theatre. This connection with Suresh Kumar, Unni, Priyadarsan, S Kumar, Ashok Kumar, and Maniyapilla Raju, among others, resulted in the founding of the ‘Bharath Cine Group’ production firm.
And the buddies began filming for ‘Thiranottam,’ the first film to include Mohanlal. The shooting began on 3 September 1978 and took place in and around Mohanlal and Suresh Kumar’s homes. The film chronicled the lives of Kuttappan, a mentally handicapped servant kid. Despite the fact that the picture was completed, it was not distributed at the time. At the time, the picture encountered opposition from the censor board. However, the film was released in a single theatre in 2005 to commemorate Mohanlal’s 25 years in cinema.
However, this roadblock was insufficient to prevent the actor from Mohanlal. He persisted in spiriting up his cinematic fantasies. He and his friends used to travel to Chennai in pursuit of acting gigs during those days. Suresh Kumar came across an advertisement seeking a new face during one of these visits. The advertisement was created by Malayalam’s finest production firm, ‘Navodaya Studios’. He asked Mohanlal to respond to the advertisement, but Lal was hesitant due to his dissatisfaction with his own photograph. However, knowing the actor within him, Suresh went ahead and responded to the advertisement without notifying Lal. Mohanlal was then invited for his first screen test by the production house. The screening panel consisted of director Fazil, Sibi Malayil, Navodaya Appachan, Jijo Appachan, and other prominent technicians. Though two members of the panel expressed dissatisfaction with him, Fazil and Jijo expressed their admiration. As a result, he earned the character of Narendran in Fazil’s ‘Manjil Virinja Pookal’. The picture premiered on Christmas Eve 1980. Years later, in an interview with Reader’s Digest, Mohanlal said that his youthful appearance may have worked in his favour.
The film started slowly but grew in popularity over time, owing to the great performances by Mohanlal and Shankar. It became a rage among teenagers and ran for 200 days in theatres, making it a grand hit. Though he played the antagonist in the film, Lal garnered considerable audience attention and won excellent marks from critics for his effortless portrayal. Thus, at the age of 20, Mohanlal began his formal adventure through the world 24 frames.
Being presented by a successful filmmaker under the largest production house in Malayalam with a significant role and being well-received by both the audience and critics was the kind of opening any actor could wish for. The following year, he was cast in eight films, the majority of which featured him in a negative character. Nonetheless, his performances were always noteworthy. He later stated that he never feared being typecast because his sole love was acting. The antagonistic characters had a reprieve with Malayalam’s first 70mm film, ‘Padayottam’. Jijo Punnoose’s film was largely inspired on the classic novel ‘The Count of Monte Cristo,’ with Mohanlal portraying a sympathetic figure named Kannan.
The film also starred the other ‘Big M’ of Malayalam cinema, Mammootty. He worked in both positive and negative parts as a lead and supporting character till 1984 but never ventured into the comic genre. It was his friend and now-famous filmmaker Priyadarshan’s debut film, ‘Poochakkoru Mookkuthi,’ that demonstrated to the audience that he can handle even comedic roles. Mohanlal appeared in nearly 97 films throughout the first five years of his career, with many earning him critical acclaim. Among them is I.V. Sasi’s ‘Uyarangalil,’ in which he portrays Jayarajan, a wicked yet endearing plantation manager. This was also his first appearance as a true anti-hero. Mohanlal received his debut credit as a playback vocalist in 1985 with the film ‘Onnanam Kunnil Oradi Kunnil’. The song was titled “Sindhoora Megham,” and Raghu Kumar created the music.
